Barsaoui’s superb “A Son” deserves significant attention. The others; the drama is not over played, the acting is superb and the twists in the narrative are truly impressive. Plus, if you've never been to Algeria now's your chance. The set up is deceptively simple; an obviously happy, middle class family have their lives turned upside down when they take their new SUV out for a drive and are ambushed. Their son is hirt by a bullet and needs urgent medical attention. During thris process secrets are revealed and their world is further turned upside down. Paternalism, cultural practice and acceptance and universal relationship themes are all explored here to great effect. You will not be diappointed.
