It's Switzerland in the 1950's and an American man James Larkin , travelling by train, is arrested at the Swiss border. He is suspected of being someone else, a Swiss sculptor Anatol Stiller who fled after being involved in what was known as the "Smyrnov Affair" He is the same age as Stiller and bears a striking physical resemblance to the person Swiss authorities are seeking.
While awaiting verification from the U.S. Embassy and other sources, White regailes a prison guard with tales about his adventures even as friends and acquaintances visit and identify him as Stiller. Stiller's wife, played by Paula Beer, a former ballet dancer who now runs a dance school, travels from Paris to visit him…
