About the Event

One of the most important artists of any era, Ryuichi Sakamoto had a prolific career spanning over four decades, from techno-pop stardom to Oscar-winning film composer. The evolution of his music coincided with his life journeys.  Following the disaster at Fukushima, Sakamoto became an iconic figure in Japan’s social movement against nuclear power.

When  Sakamoto returned to his music following cancer, his haunting awareness of a life crisis lead to a resounding new masterpiece.

Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda is a gentle and reflective portrait of both the artist and the man.

Granted unprecedented access to Sakamoto's life and work, Stephen Nomura Schible's sensitive and illuminating film stands not only as a portrait of an extraordinary career, but surely one of the most intimate examinations of the creative process ever committed to film.

"A portrait of an artist that's nearly as powerful and necessary as the artist himself." Indie Wire

"An uncommonly engaging artist portrait." The New York Times

"A deep dive into the artistry of an original thinker." The Hollywood Reporter

"Never busy, never intrusive, it  gracefully maintains a gentle tempo while remaining calm, respectful and thoughtful." The Times
